Student Support Services
Sister Jeanne Laufersweiler, a seasoned teacher, is on hand weekly at Sacred Heart to work in a variety of ways
with individuals or groups of students. Sister Jeanne's position at Sacred Heart is funded by a grant from the
Diocese of Wheeling Charleston. As an Instructional Resource Aid Jeanne works with students on special projects,
provides challenge for students ready to move beyond grade level in specific areas, and works to reinforce skills
with others. Sister Jeanne's involvement with the school is a great plus in meeting children's needs. In addition
Sister Jeanne volunteers her time to coordinate the Newspaper Club that meets after school each week.
Sock Hop
John and Jim Hunt and Eddie Nenni, all members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, better known as
"The Jaguar's' were featured at a "Sock Hop" held recently at the New Sacred Heart Gym.
Math-a-thon
Highlighting one of their service projects, students
from Sacred Heart proudly display their Math–a-
thon certificates and shirts. Math-a–thon is an
annual project to  benefit St. Jude’s Children’s
Hospital in Memphis Tennessee. Children there
have life threatening diseases and count on money
raised throughout the country on this program to
further research. Sacred Heart students
participated by doing math problems for which
they had gotten sponsors.  This year children
raised $1,300. You can tell from their smiles that
they “Celebrate Service” this year’s theme of
Catholic Schools Week.  Children are pictured with
Mrs. Smith, the coordinator of the project.
Magician
Master magician, ventriloquist, and balloon
artist, Gary Booth, does just want he plans
by astonishing Anaya Ali with the appearance
of a live dove!  Mr. Booth capped Catholic
Schools Week off for the students with his
performance sponsored by Tri- State Building
and Construction Trades Council and the
Mingo County Drug Free Schools Program.
His motivational message of the importance
of developing good character and living
healthy lives was wonderfully delivered within
the context of his captivating performance,
and well received. Students at Sacred Heart
look forward to Gary’s visit year after year.

Congratulations to Andrew Mullins who is this year’s recipient of the Aquinas Medal.
Andrew and his family traveled to Morgantown to receive the award at the Bishop’s
Dinner. The medal is awarded annually to a student in the highest grade in each
school of the Diocese who demonstrates the value of Catholic school education. The
medal was named for Saint Thomas Aquinas, a scholar and exemplary Christian who
lived during the middle ages.
